The neighboring town of Teulada with narrow cobbled streets lined with palm trees and tall townhouses all painted in various autumnal hues is a quiet and tranquil city. Agriculture is still of great importance to the city and all around it is grown from olives, grapes, lemons and oranges. Teulada has retained its Spanish character with heritage and traditions despite the fact that many Dutch, Germans and Englishmen have made Teulada their new home. The name Benissa itself is Arabic and means the son of Isa, who was probably a significant Arab tribe that populated this area during the Arab era. Feel free to try the local gastronomy in Benissa, which consists of delicious rice dishes and meats. Don't miss the old town of medieval character either. There are buildings from both the 16th and 16th century and the 18th century here that are well worth visiting and Calle Desamparados, with many stately houses with wrought iron gates.
