The nice little village of Finestrat with approx. 6,400 residents is about a mile inland from Benidorm. The village is located on a hill 262 meters above the sea and is characterized by narrow streets and terraced houses of Maori origin. 5 km from the village is the small beach and is one of the smallest in Spain with a coastline of 267 meters. The small beach known as Cala de Finestrat was given to the village in gratitude for their help in protecting the coast from Barbary or Berber pirate attacks. Puig Campana Mountain, which measures 1,410 meters above sea level lies behind Finestrat and is a popular mountain to hike in and nearby is the Terra Mitica theme park. Puig Campana is the second highest mountain in Alicante and protects Finestrat and it is easily recognized by the gorge known as "El Portell", Tajo or Cuchilla de Roldan (Knife of Roldan). Legend has it that the French hero Roland got involved in a fight with a giant.
