The town is small but has a great history going back in time. That Polop was an important city once upon a time is hard to believe when you stroll around the alleys. Around the year 1000, the Moors conquered the Iberian peninsula and built a fortress and named the city Polop. With the castle on the highest point and with the city's strategic location, Polop became an important city. The area was a burgh and almonds, oranges and lemons were grown here. In the 17th century, irrigation systems were built with water canals and this canal collected its water from the Pono and runs through the towns of Polop, La Nucia, Alfaz del Pi and Benidorm.
