Villajoyosa, is only 20 km north of Alicante and has about 30,000 inhabitants. Like so many other coastal towns this is also from the beginning an old fishing village that still lives on fishing today but has now grown into a small Spanish town. This charming and picturesque town has a lovely sandy beach that ends at a marina and fishing port. "La Villa" is known for the original houses, painted in different pastel colors. The houses were formerly fishermen's dwellings and were used by the fishermen get lost, they could easily see the colorful houses from the sea and find their way back home. Villajoyosa has a number of historic buildings and in the past there was a castle with a watchtower warning of the enemy. Today we can see remains of the walls that date from the 17th century. There is a beautiful Gothic church where the gate is an entrance to the old town center and there are also Roman bridges. The old town of Villajoyosa has been designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site because of its characteristic neighborhoods and the beaches are said to be the whitest on the entire Costa Blanca coast. The mountain range provides good protection from cold northerly winds so the climate is very pleasant here, but in July-August it gets very hot. There are a number of hiking trails of varying difficulty, but if you prefer it a little easier, there are several walking trails to choose from. In the direction of Benidorm, the Cala walk goes over cliffs and the harbor and south towards Alicante goes the Xarco walk, over the Amadorio river on beautiful beaches and past the watchtower. Both of these routes show historical sights and they take about 2-3 hours in each direction. The market place can be found in the old part of Villajoyosa and the market is an authentic Spanish one with humane prices. Here you can find most things to buy, such as clothes, jewelery and leather goods are particularly affordable. In the port, the traditional fish auctions are held every evening when the fishermen come in with their catch. It is a pleasure to witness these lively auctions where the restaurants bid for the best fish. In Villajoyosa you can also visit Valor, one of Spain's oldest and largest chocolate manufacturers. Here you can have an interesting tour, taste and, of course, buy Spain's best chocolate, Valor. During the tour, you learn that the factory was founded by Valeriano Lopez Lloret back in 1881 and that the fifth generation now owns it and runs it around the clock with the help of 300 employees. Villajoyosa can be reached by car within about 30 minutes from Alicante airport. In addition, there is a bus service and not least the narrow-gauge train that connects Villajoyosa with Alicante in the south and Denia in the north. You don't need a car here, you can get by with public transport.
